This Friday, June 22, 2007, fans will witness a showdown of Old School vs. New School between MMA legend Frank Shamrock and New York’s Bad Ass Phil Baroni.
Frank Shamrock was dubbed the first light heavyweight champion of the UFC and retired as a 5-time undefeated champion and was crowned temporary king of Pancrase. Moreover, Shamrock is the current coach for the San Jose Razorclaws of the International Fight League. Frank Shamrock is also the adoptive younger brother of mixed marital artist and former professional wrestling star Ken Shamrock.
Frank Shamrock was disqualified in his first EliteXC debut at EliteXC: Destiny against Renzo Gracie back in February 10, 2007, for kneeing Gracie in the back of the head while he was down.
Phil Baroni on the other hand, is the “younger” fighter as far as experience goes. Baroni is best known for his boxing skills, aggressive attitude and tremendous power. Baroni currently trains in Team Hammer House alongside Kevin Randleman and Mark Coleman.
Shamrock and Baroni have been mouthing off to each for quite a while so the hostility is certainly there. This matchup should be pretty damn exciting if all goes well.
As far as predictions go, this is a pretty difficult one to call, but if I had to pick one I’d probably say Phil Baroni by a KO, the man has dynamite in both hands and the speed to match it. I would much rather see Frank Shamrock pull out a mind blowing submission from his arsenal of leg locks.
Friday’s card also features Murilo “Ninja” Rua, Cung Le, Tony Fryklund, and some others. Unfortunately, Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennet’s status is still pending due to his jail troubles. I thought I had heard something about Rua failing his pre-fight physical, but I will keep you posted on that.
Tomorrow night's full fightcard can be found here.
Results will be posted at the conclusion of tomorrow’s event.
