Not too long ago, MMA fans witnessed an incoherent Chuck Liddell blurt out his desire to fight Tommy Morrison on Good Morning Texas. With the rapid decline of boxing, Tommy was quick to fire back at Chuck in an attempt to revitalize boxing, saying: “I will take on Chuck Liddell anytime, anyplace, anywhere.”
Some fans anxiously waited for Dana White to organize some sort of matchup between the two. However, what fans got in return was a worthless match against no name John Stover. If this wasn’t bad enough, the Arizona State Athletic Commission restricted the use of anything outside of punches. John Stover’s contract specifically stated “THIS IS A STRIKING MATCH ONLY, NO GROUND.” Some MMA debut eh? So of course, Tommy Morrison, a former World Boxing Organization champion, made quick work of John Stover in just 2:08 of the first round.
What does trouble me and others out there is the fact that Morrison tested positive for HIV in 1996 according to a blood test done by NSAC. Morrison’s former agent Randy Lang stated that the Oklahoma native tested positive for HIV in blood tests conducted in order to attain a boxing license. Morrison’s current advisor, Peter McKinn contested such allegations with papers showing Morrison testing negative for HIV 1, HIV 2 along with hepatitis B and C.
All this seems pretty shady to me, being that Morrison tested positive multiple times in the past and by some miracle of God, the disease simply “went away.” Nonetheless, I think Morrison is doing no good for boxing and is a sad excuse for a human being. A bit harsh I know, but this guy is a maniac.
So, what was set to be Morrison’s big MMA break was quickly turned into a three round caged boxing match with 4 oz. gloves. Pretty absurd if you ask me.
Stay classy fans,
