UFC looks to expand their fan base just a little bit more. Recently hitting such locations as London, Ireland, and various states in the U.S., the UFC hopes to get laid as they have their eyes set on Hawaii.
Hawaii's Aloha Stadium would be the likely target to hold the UFC events. Aloha Stadium, situated in Honolulu, Hawaii, is an outdoor arena that seats around 50,000 people. MMA events have been held in Hawaii in the past, notable ones include : BJ Penn vs. Renzo Gracie, BJ Penn vs. Rodrigo Gracie, Mayhem Miller vs. Nike Vitale and Tank Abbott vs. Cabbage Correira.
According to Star-Bulletin, UFC President Dana White hopes to have fighters from PRIDE and UFC participate in a show at Aloha Stadium sometime in 2008, here is what White said:
“I’m working on that right now as a matter of fact. I’ve wanted to bring one there for a long time and now that we have acquired PRIDE, I think it’s the perfect time to do that big stadium because it would pull a lot of Americans and a lot of Japanese fans. Next year, believe me [it will] happen. It will be our first outdoor fight. We’ve never done it before because it has always scared the (expletive) out of me.”
Looks like White is taking a page out of bodogFIGHT president Calvin Ayre's book and having outdoor MMA events. Nonetheless, any event in Hawaii involving Hawaii's greatest BJ "The Prodigy" Penn will surely attract countless fans and further expand UFC's fan base.
Hawaii's MMA attendance record to beat is K-1's: World Grand Prix Hawaii event, which was held in 2005. The attendance was 12,000, where BJ Penn defeated Renzo Gracie by unanimous decision.
Well, whenever the UFC comes around to Hawaii I hope to have enough money to head out for it. That would surely be the most lively event, I would imagine. It would surely make for a kick-ass vacation!
Aloha!
