One of the rarest feats in professional wrestling is the five-star match. The "star rating" system, popularized by WOW editor Dave Meltzer, rates matches on a scale of one to five stars. The ratings are a largely subjective affair that may take into account the amount of action, as opposed to rest holds; the difficulty and variety of moves used; the history of the workers and their feud; the development of an in-match storyline based on the wrestling moves, and how they affect the wrestlers; and the overall reaction of the crowd. To date, there have been four five-star matches in WWE history. They are:
WrestleMania X: Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon (Ladder match)
Summerslam 1994: Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart (Steel Cage match)
WrestleMania 13: Bret Hart vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin (Submission match)
In Your House: Badd Blood: Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker (Hell in a Cell)
However, I would submit that limiting the amount of five-star matches to just these four is being nearsighted. I would like to offer up the following matches as five-star candidates. Please comment on the board with your thoughts and/or own favorites.
WrestleMania X: Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart
WrestleMania XII: Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart (Iron Man match)
King of the Ring 1998: The Undertaker vs. Mankind (Hell in a Cell)
Summerslam 1998: HHH vs. The Rock (Ladder match)
Royal Rumble 1999: The Rock vs. Mankind (I Quit match)
St. Valentine's Day Massacre: The Rock vs. Mankind (Last Man Standing match)
Royal Rumble 2000: HHH vs. Cactus Jack (Street Fight match)
WrestleMania 2000: Chris Benoit vs. Chris Jericho vs. Kurt Angle (Two Fall match)
Summerslam 2000: Edge & Christian vs. Dudley Boyz vs. Hardy Boyz (TLC match)
WrestleMania X-7: Edge & Christian vs. Dudley Boyz vs. Hardy Boyz (TLC match)
WrestleMania 21: Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels
If you can find me footage for the ones I'm missing, please let me know.
