Gorgeous Georges

If Georges St. Pierre can defeat Matt Serra tomorrow night at UFC 69: Shootout, it will mark the most recent complete domination of the Welterweight division since Matt Hughes ran the table from 2001 to 2004, culminating in a loss to B.J. Penn (which was later avenged). St. Pierre, of course, lost to Hughes at UFC 50: The War of '04, but has since avenged the loss in his most recent fight with Hughes. Since that loss in 2004, St. Pierre defeated Frank Trigg (whom Hughes had trouble with but beat twice), Sean Sherk (whom Hughes could only muster a decision against), and B.J. Penn (whom Hughes has a split record against). Following these three convincing wins, St. Pierre dominated Hughes before taking the title in the second round of UFC 65: Bad Intentions. With this expected win over Serra, there will literally be no one left in the division to take on St. Pierre. Sure, Hughes will get his rematch three PPVs from now, but judging from their last bout, the result should be nothing more than a formality. I consider myself a huge Matt Hughes fan, but I can no longer tell myself that he is the best fighter in the Welterweight division. St. Pierre is simply too fast, too strong, and too talented to shove aside any longer.

I recently got into the whole UFC thing, and I think it's great. I didn't see this fight last night, but my boyfriend did and he came home very disappointed that St. Pierre lost. From what he said, it was a lucky shot. You know what, sh*t happens and in the world of fighting, you just never can tell. Who would have thought that Matt Hughs would have lost.
