Royce Gracie Fails Drug Test

What do legend Royce Gracie and MMA newcomer and former NFL wide receiver Johnnie Morton have in common? They both fought at K-1's Dynamite!! USA on June 2, 2007 and both tested positive for anabolic steroid use.

Royce Gracie, with a record of (14-3-3), is considered to be a living legend in the sport of mixed martial arts, winning UFC1, UFC2, and UFC4, and helping the UFC’s evolution in its earlier days.

The UFC hall of famer has been suspended and fined by the California State Athletic Commission for failing a post-fight drug test. Gracie tested positive for traces of Nandrolone Metabolite, an anabolic steroid, after his recent decision win over Kazushi Sakuraba. Gracie has been suspended from June 2, 2007 through May 30, 2008 and has been fined the maximum penalty by the CSAC of $2,500.

Drug and steroid usage is getting old these days among MMA fighters, refer to: (http://irishwhip.blogspot.com/2007/06/johnnie-morton-tests-positive-for.html). Nick Diaz and Thiago Alves are the only fighters that have recently tested positive for some form of drug abuse and have earned impressive wins (though Nick’s was overturned). It slips my mind as to why his win against Takanori Gomi (PRIDE 33) was overturned by the NSAC for marijuana usage while steroid users are allowed to keep their wins. Can't win 'em all.

Anyways, Royce Gracie testing positive for steroids is simply disheartening. I will never understand why fighters try to fool and duck the drug tests.

Drug free is the way to be,
